This is my journey to becoming a Prince artist - I started drawing and painting as a child and then at school in the early 60s, drawing my favourite pop stars – Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Scott Walker and others. Soon after my school friends asked me to paint their favourites. I charged a shilling!
I continued painting watercolours, the occasional commission and, when I had a second-hand clothes shop, I painted the clothes to use as advertising instead of using a photo.
I was 17 when I did this drawing of Jimi way back in 1967. I found it recently and was struck by the confidence and ease that came with youth. The pencil marks are bold and assured… something I lost over the years but fortunately regained. To quote Prince - “Never give up”
A Prince fan since the early 80s
I saw Prince in concert twice at the Lovesexy Tour in 1988 and again in 2007 for the 21 Nights at the O2. Then life got in the way and he disappeared from my radar. I’ll always regret the missed concerts and surprise after shows.
On April 21st 2016 everything changed
I started looking for pictures, concerts, interviews, anything and discovered artists who had painted him in many different mediums - watercolours, pencil, charcoal, acrylic and even make-up.
Inspired to start painting again
I was first inspired by Blule (Clementine Campardue) who is an amazing watercolour artist followed by San Siguenza who paints using make-up. These two amazing artists, and Prince of course, inspired me to start painting again... and I've never looked back.
I’ve met, befriended, and learned from many other artists along the way, including JadenKai, Marco 't Hart, Mary Bendtsen Johnson, Patrick Moriarty, Daniel Lacey and others.
